On Monday, September 9, 2019, Representative Lauren Underwood (D-IL) will address the TRIO community at COE’s 38th Annual Conference at the Hyatt Regency in Chicago. When sworn into office in January 2019, Representative Underwood became the youngest African-American woman ever to serve in the United States Congress. She is also the first woman, first person of color, and first millennial to represent her community. Today she sits on the House Committee on Education and Labor, which has direct jurisdiction over TRIO and other higher education programs. She also serves as the Vice Chair of the House Homeland Security Committee and serves on the Veterans Affairs and House Democratic Steering and Policy Committees. A registered nurse, Representative Underwood came to Capitol Hill after serving as a Senior Advisor at the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services and as an instructor of nurse practitioners at Georgetown University.
